About a year ago, most users began to see something new in their Facebook news feed. Sandwiched between birth announcements and attention-seeking status updates were video clips. A lot of video clips, in fact. By September 2014, after the "Ice Bucket Challenge," Facebook was bragging that it served a billon views per day.
There's a reason why Facebook's videos took off: Unlike YouTube links, the vast majority of the videos were autoplay by default, of higher quality, and took up more space on the page. The advertising implications were obvious. Or were they?
Video ads deliver greater awareness and usually command higher CPMs than banners, which explains Facebook's interest in them. For advertisers, though, the case is less compelling. Despite Facebook's massive reach, if you're looking for deeper awareness and engagement, your video ad will probably perform a lot better if presented outside of Facebook -- particularly on contextually relevant sites -- for the following reasons:
1. Facebook is not the best forum for advertising in general. A recent study found that people have two primary motivations for going on Facebook: More at AdAge.
Throughout this TV season, fans have taken to Twitter to discuss edge-of-your-seat moments and minute-by-minute action. Whether to celebrate a game winning shot, mourn a fallen character or gasp at a scandalous plot twist, thumbs across the U.S. tapped furiously, sending millions of Tweets and generating over a billion impressions on average each week.
Fans watching programs live shared experiences together, while their Tweets, according to recent research from Nielsen Social, may have reminded others to catch-up later in the week. So, as this TV season comes to an end, it’s time to recap how series programs, special events and sports events captivated audiences on Twitter in the U.S. this season from Sept. 1, 2014, through May 24, 2015.
At REDEF, we consume all types of content – from indie films to long form points of view, executive perspectives and the passionate blog posts of industry insiders and outsiders. Our curators sift through the infinite so that our members can be better informed about their business and its future. In some instances, we share our thinking on ideas and areas we believe are overlooked or underappreciated. This was the inspiration behind our REDEF Originals.
Over the past few years, the television landscape has been as dramatic and character-filled as the best of Game of Thrones episodes. To that end, it should come as no surprise that there have been threats that have gone unseen or under-addressed by the major and minor television networks. After a few lively conversations above the monitors at REDEF HQ, we came up with “7 Deadly Sins: Where Hollywood is Wrong about the Future of TV”, written by our Head of Original Content, Liam Boluk. Not every threat applies to every network – nor are they equally menacing – but as a whole, we believe they’re critical to both understanding and planning for the future of television.
Netflix is experimenting with advertising with its service, but it's not what you think.
On Monday news reports from Cord Cutters News and Motherboard indicated that Netflix was playing around with pre-roll and post-roll advertisements for some of its content.
The easy assumption to make would be that Netflix was toying around with embracing advertising — a model some analysts have pushed the company to consider. But take a deep breath, Netflix fans, you are not about to start getting Hulu-style ads before your binge-watch the upcoming season of Orange is the New Black or nerd-out over some classic episodes of Cheers.
In a statement, Netflix told Mashable:
"We are not planning to test or implement third-party advertising on the Netflix service. For some time, we've teased Netflix originals with short trailers after a member finishes watching a show. Some members in a limited test now are seeing teases before a show begins. We test hundreds of potential improvements to the service every year. Many never extend beyond that."
We're also hearing that Netflix sees this move as no different than the way HBO, Showtime and other pay-channels advertise their own programming. More at Mashable
